playforPLACEis an international experimental performance project in which Sofia Mavragani explores the performative potential of the act of playing and its uniqueability to transform the real into the imaginative, the serious into the droll, the actual locality into an unexpected one. Inspired by theDutch historian Johan Huizinga and his “Homo Ludens” philosophy, Sofia develops a series of in situ performance workshops and game structures that consider the crucial role of lucidity in culture and society. By juxtaposing ordinary life and special spatial/local temperament with the subversive world of Play, playforPLACE explores how game structures interfere with, enrich and finally shape the artistic result.
In eachlocation visited, Sofia Mavragani creates a unique experimentalworkshop/process together with a local artist based on collective teaching andexperiential exchange. The workshop’s co-creators are active in various artdisciplines (dance, theatre, music, visual arts etc.) allowing them to approachthe notion of Play from different perspectives. Each collaboration creates aunique prism through which different ideas and practices for playing areexplored. playforPLACE is interested in playing with the dynamics of a variedgroup of people. Therefore, it welcomes all kind of artists, professionals andeveryday people. People with an interest in and talent for playfulness! Amultifaceted group is being created; diverse people play together, interact andchallenge the possibility of creating new performative forms.
