playforPLACE

playforPLACE is an international experimental performance project in which Sofia Mavragani  explores the performative potential of the act of playing and its unique ability to transform the real into the imaginative, the serious into the  droll, the actual locality into an unexpected one. Inspired by the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga and his “Homo Ludens” philosophy, Sofia develops  a series of in situ performance workshops and game structures that consider the  crucial role of lucidity in culture and society. By juxtaposing ordinary life  and special spatial/local temperament with the subversive world of Play, playforPLACE explores how game structures interfere with, enrich and finally  shape the artistic result.

In each location visited, Sofia Mavragani creates a unique experimental workshop/process together with a local artist based on collective teaching and experiential exchange. The workshop’s co-creators are active in various art disciplines (dance, theatre, music, visual arts etc.) allowing them to approach the notion of Play from different perspectives. Each collaboration creates a unique prism through which different ideas and practices for playing are explored. playforPLACE is interested in playing with the dynamics of a varied group of people. Therefore, it welcomes all kind of artists, professionals and everyday people. People with an interest in and talent for playfulness! A multifaceted group is being created; diverse people play together, interact and challenge the possibility of creating new performative forms. The workshop takes place in conventional or unconventional spaces and leads to a presentation open to the public.
